SThe Cytochromes P450 mediate a variety of oxidative transformations and the mechanism(s) by which they accomplish this is of great interest. While it is generally accepted that the ferryl species (Cpd I) is the major oxidising species generated during the enzyme catalytic cycle, the ferric hydroperoxy species (Cpd 0) could potentially be involved in mediating less energetically demanding reactions. Our work on oxidation of fatty acids and thiafatty acids by P450BM3 and its T268A mutant suggests that Cpd 0 may be involved in mediating sulfur oxidation.
