The most likely origin of the radical formed by tunneling ionization is an M, F, W, or Y residue; however, peptides without these residues are still amenable to fs-LID. All sequence ions except c-type ions are observed in the fs-LID MS/MS spectra, with a- and b-type ions being the most abundant. Side-chain losses are abundant in the fs-LID spectra and give rise to satellite ions that can be used for Leu/Ile differentiation.
