The female flowers of hops (Humulus lupulus L.) are used in the brewing industry as a flavoring agent for beer. Xanthohumol, a major constituent of hops, is under investigation as a cancer chemoprevention agent, and 8-prenylnaringenin, a metabolite of xanthohumol and a minor constituent of hops, is a potent phytoestrogen. How ever, little is known about possible inte ractions of the se and other prenyl flavonoids with drug metabolism enzymes. To evaluate the potential for cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme inhibition by hop extracts and prenylflavonoids, an in vitro assay based on the use of human liver microsome s and UHPLC- MS-MS was validated and applied.
