The TLC-MALDI approach for asphaltene analysis affords well-resolved MALD-TOF-MS signals. A characteristic mass defect of 24 units in the asphaltene subfractions indicates that asphaltene molecules of Colombian heavy crude oil are highly aromatic. Our data suggests that TLC MALDI is a promising technique for asphaltene fractionation and analysis.
