THE TOXICITY OF FIVE PHTHALATES ON RED TIDE ALGAE GYMNODINIUM BREVE

In order to assess the effects of phthalate esters to the marine environment, the ecological toxicities of five phthalate esters, benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and di-ethyl phthalate (DEP), to marine algae Gymnodinium breve had been studied by chemical standard method appraising the toxicity. The preliminary test concentrations of the five phthalate esters were 0, 1,5, 10, 20,50,100mg L~(-1). The definitive test concentrations were selected based on the preliminary range-finding test, the cell density of G.breve was measured daily and the subcellular structure was examined after 96h exposure. The results showed that, after 96h exposure, (1) DEHP and DMP had little effect on the inhibition of growth on G.breve, and no significant difference was found between groups. No Observed Effects Concentrations of DMP and DEHP to G.breve are higher than 50 and 100 mg L~(-1), respectively.
