Cultures of the Red Tide organism Gymnodinium breve have been grown under axenic conditions. The delay of several days after subculture has been eliminated with the use of small quantities of Gibberellic acid and mass cultures are now available. Toxic fractions have been separated by extraction and chromatography. Using a Sephadex column a heavier homolytic fraction and a lighter neurotoxic fraction have been separated. The lighter fraction runs on TLC with the small carotenoid component of the gymnodinium cell. Further separation has occurred and the fractions are shown to be highly toxic to a variety of animals. Sites of action have been studied. Research on the toxin from a Nemertine worm is described and purification identification and synthesis of the toxin Anabaseine is reported. (Author)
