The objective of this paper is to discuss the prevalence of HIV infection and its association with age and type of sex work among female sex workers in two districts in India. FHI has been implementing Aastha, a BMGF supported HIV/STI prevention project with 24,000 sex workers in Mumbai and Thane. From March 2009 to October 2010, 13,669 female sex workers (FSW) underwent voluntary counseling and testing for HIV in the integrated counseling and testing centers of the project. Of the 13,669 tested, 623 FSWs tested positive for HIV (4.6%). Among the 623 HIV-positive FSWs, 177 FSWs (28.4 %) were aged18-24years; 404 FSWs (64.8 %) were aged 25-36 years and 42 FSWs (6.7%) were aged 37 years or older. By FSW typology, HIV prevalence was as follows: 13.1% amongst brothel-based; 3.3% amongst bar-based; 4.7% amongst street-based; 1.6% amongst home-based; and 1.6% amongst lodge-based FSWs. The difference in HIV prevalence is highly significant statistically across different typologies as well as age groups (p=0.0001). As the highest HIV prevalence (13.1%) was observed in brothel-based FSWs, we recommend that the national policy on HIV testing could consider HIV testing for brothel-based FSWs on a quarterly basis.
