Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) is characterized by subcortical white-matter lesion on MRI/CT. In this study, we examined whether synchrotron radiation (SR) microangiography can detect functional DM microangiopathy and visualize directly the perforating branches of cerebral arteries (PBCA) in rat models. The finger tip SR microangiography visualized arterioles with a diameter range of 5 0-3 00 um and also visualized a paradoxical vasoconstriction of arterioles in DM rats. SR microangiography could visualize perforating branches of cerebral arteries (PBCA) in control and DM rat models. In conclusion, SR microangiography can detect functional DM microangiopathy the both in fingertip arterioles and PBCA in rats, and could be useful for clinical evaluation of vascular disease and Alzheimer's-overlap syndrome.
