In the past decade, Zintl phases have seen a significant increase in research because they provide a class of compounds where one can easily correlate the structure and bonding to physical properties. Zintl phases are a subset of the intermetallics where the structure can be understood using simple electron counting rules and in general, the stoichiometry is consistent with an electron precise semiconductor.2 Zintl phases are made up of electropositive elements that donate their electrons to the more electronegative metalloids to form isolated anions, polyhedra, or extended structures. The structures can be described via a combination of ionic bonding between the cations and anions and covalent bonding for polyhedra or extended structures. In the case of isolated anions, the element can be considered to complete its octet.
