Obtaining Red Wines with Controlled Denomination of Origin (DOC) from Romanian Cultivars in the Vineyards from Oltenia, Romania

Oltenia region, situated in the south-west of Romania, has natural conditions of climate and soil which allow to obtain different kinds of wines like: white, rose, red, aromatic, dry and sweet, of table and of quality. Traditionally, in this area the main direction in production is the obtaining of the red wines of high quality. The red wines with Controlled Denomination of Origin (DOC), are produced from international cultivars of vine like: 'Cabernet Sauvignon', 'Merlot', 'Pinot noir', and from Romanian cultivars like: 'Feteasc? neagr?', 'Novae' and 'Negru de Dragasani', monovarietal type or in different technological blendings. One of the three Romanian cultivars, 'Feteasc? neagr?', is used for obtaining wines DOC-CT (Late Harvest) type and the other two, 'Novae' and 'Negru de Dragasani', are used for wines DOC-CMD (Harvest at Full Maturity). For obtaining the first type of wine, DOC-CT (Late Harvest), the grape production is limited to 8 t/ha, while for the type DOC-CMD (Harvest at Full Maturity) the production is limited to 10 t/ha. For DOC-CT (Late Harvest) wines, the grapes are harvested at 213 g/L sugars content for dry wines and at 220 g/L sugars content for semi-dry and semi-sweet wines. For wines DOC-CMD (Harvest at Full Maturity), the grapes are harvested at minimum 187 g/L sugars content for dry wines, 192 g/L for semi-dry wines and 200 g/L for semi-sweet wines. Between the three Romanian cultivars, 'Feteasc? neagr?' has the greatest capacity of sugars accumulation, being at the same level with the international cultivars. 'Negru de Dragasani' has the greatest capacity of anthocyans accumulation, almost like 'Cabernet Sauvignon'. The 'Feteasc? neagr?' wines are destinated, in main, for aging. The 'Novae' and 'Negru de Dragasani' are recommended to be consumed like young wines.
