This program started with getting students involved in High Altitude Balloonmissions, evolved through payload development for the HAB missions, through anISS contact involving a dozen APS schools, to last summer’s dual credit electronicscourse where over 15 new hams spent 10 hours per day, 5 days per week for 3weeks, plus Field Day weekend learning hands-on ham radio, electronics andphysics. These students are now hooked on learning and STEM. Equally asimpressive, the adult mentors from industry and the amateur radio communityare now hooked on helping students. The school district and the APS EducationFoundation are also hooked, as the STI has proven itself as a highly effective wayto reach a lot of students for a minimal outlay of precious funds.
