The presentations shared a common theme in that each offered a challenge to the ways in which we might make decisions within an ethical framework. In my introduction to the session, I outlined an ethical model used in the field of animal research to achieve a balance between animal welfare and a concern to ensure delivery of the scientific advances needed. This is illustrated in Figure 1.
