Besides peptidoglycan and lipoproteins, wall teichoic acids (WTA) and lipoteichoic acids (LTA) are the major constituents of the Gram-positive cell wall. Streptococcus pneumoniae possesses a - in comparison to other Gram-positive bacteria - structurally unique, complex LTA which is highly decorated with phosphorylcholine (ChoP) residues. Pneumococcal teichoic acids (pnTA) play an important role in bacterial survival, growth and pathogenicity. For example, the ChoP residues serve as anchors for surface-located choline-binding proteins (CBPs), which have immunoprotective potential or are involved in essential physiological functions like cell wall turnover and bacterial adhesion.
