With close to a forty year old design, an aging fleet of aircraft, and an increasing service life requirement, the United States Air Force (USAF) F-16 Fighting Falcon requires vigilant monitoring of its structural health. By using a network of interconnected databases, the F-16 System Program Office (SPO) tracks individual aircraft usage in order to provide tail specific inspection and maintenance requirements, as well as record inspection results and other needed data. Fleet cracking data from the inspections can then be used to improve crack growth models for all F-16 operators. As a history of flight severity is gathered for an individual aircraft through Crash Survivable Flight Data Recorder (CSFDR) downloads, a lifetime cumulative Severity Factor (SF) is calculated. The SF for an aircraft is then used to generate Equivalent Flight Hours (EFH) so that each aircraft may be compared in a manner that accounts for flight severity. Using EFH values in conjunction with other F-16 data systems led to the creation of a Health of the Fleet (HOTF) database. The capabilities of the HOTF database allow for new cracking trends to be identified more quickly than in the past, which can be used to update fatigue crack growth models, more quickly address fleet management issues, and ultimately improve the safety and longevity of the F-16 fleet.
