The corner of the punch tends to seizure, and it induces a crack in punching of stainless steel plate. Automatic re-lubrication using pulsating motion with a servo press was utilised to improve the quality of a sheared edge in punching of a stainless steel thick plate, The punch corner was automatically re-lubricated by pulsating motion. The lubricants are fed into the bottom of punch by negative pressure generated with an upstroke of the punch. The effects of pulsating motion on the quality of the sheared edge and adhesion of the punch were investigated with the flat punch and radiused corner punch. The burnished area was remarkably increased for pulsating motion, and the full burnished surface was obtained for clearance of 1% in thickness using the radiused corner punch.
