In 2017, Haaga-Helia started an EU-funded project to help small and medium size Finnish eCom enterprises (SMEs) internationalize their eCom operations. At first, eight companies joined the project, and in the latter phase, they were joined by four more. In addition, two eCom consulting companies and three foreign universities were recruited. Around 30 Finnish and 40 foreign students took part in different phases of the project. The final goal of the project was to create an eComLab environment, where students, companies, and staff members could meet and learn how to use digital tools to develop eCom businesses and apply their learning to real online shops. The aim of this paper was to contribute to the expansion of business’ eCom operations to global markets. We also wanted to investigate models explaining how students, universities, and other domestic and foreign stakeholders can facilitate small firms’ global eCom operations. In addition, one important goal was to acquire knowledge and boost participants learning of fast-growing online and digital business models. The role of international students has been significant in terms of their contribution of in-depth insights into markets and buying behaviors. In addition, our results showed that universities can connect different players in order to help small companies find the right partners and encourage domestic eCom firms to start global eCom operations.
