The paper provides the biographical details of Academician Ivan Artobolevski (1905-1977), the outstanding Russian mechanician, mathematician and engineer, the first IFToMM President. The list of his most important works is given. The theory of machines and mechanisms was the major direction of I. I. Artobolevski's studies. He developed the general theory of mechanism structure and used it in order to formulate the methods of kinematic and kinetostatic analysis of mechanisms. He also devised the general methods for mechanism synthesis. The student years of Ivan Artobolevski and the beginning of his teaching activity are described. It is shown how the talent of the scientist developed and established on the background of a challenging historical situation in Russia in the early 20th century.
