Pipeline Transport Times and Sea Bottom Temperature — A Case Study

Simulations of gas transport in subsea pipelines rely on the accuracyof the oceanographic models used to generate ambient input temperatures.Deviations in input can result in inaccuracies in the pipelinemodels which affect pipeline operations. Exact studies of the impactof any deviations in the oceanographic models are made difficult bythe limited access to measurements of sea bottom temperatures alongthe pipelines. The present paper makes use of survey data from apipeline inspection survey which gives measurement data for 86 % ofthe pipeline length. The survey data is used to generate an adjustedinput for the sea bottom temperature and to evaluate how the differencebetween measured and model sea bottom temperature impacts the outlettemperature and transport times in the pipeline model. Adjustingthe input ambient temperature is found to reduce the error in estimationof arrival times with 5 minutes, from original errors between 15 and 35minutes.
