It has been shown that immersion of composites in environments can lead to either primary chemical attack or a secondary environmental interaction. Conditioning of samples in MEK and an experimental study of dry versus conditioned samples can provide an indication of whether primary chemical attack is an issue. For IM7/977-1 in MEK we have conducted a combination of stiffness, strength and toughness tests and can find no evidence of the consequence of primary chemical attack. Investigation of secondary environmental interaction requires a combination of applied stress and the environment. A series of tensile creep tests are reported for an air and a MEK environment for toughened and untoughened epoxy composites as well as their neat resin systems. A craze mechanicsm is believed to occur for the tests in MEK. Recovery experiments after the onset of crazing show that complete recovery can occur once the load is removed even though the presence of the MEK environment remains.
