Vegetable oils are being considered as alternative fuels for small stationary diesel engines, especially in developing countries. To assess their suitability, it is necessary to examine physical properties such as boiling characteristic, cloud point, viscosity, cetane number as well as calorific value and stoichiometric air-to-fuel mass ratio. Internal engine processes must also be analyzed and finally the exhaust emissions from engines running on vegetable oils are of great importance when deciding if a given vegetable oil is suitable as an alternative diesel fuel. The paper presents test-bed results from a swirl-chamber diesel engine using four different kinds of fuel. Diesel fuel was used as a reference, and unprocessed rapeseed oil and two other vegetable oils were chosen as test fuels. The thermodynamic analysis of the measured cylinder pressure curves has been used to obtain more detailed information additional to the standard performance characteristics and the emissions. The resultant heat-release curves have helped to show correlations between the properties of the fuels used and the test bed results. In addition to the gaseous emissions, the smoke numbers and the particulate emissions according to EPA regulations have also been measured.
