Xylanase treatment can directly brighten partially bleached kraft pulps but not brownstocks. It usually leads to a direct decrease in the kappa number of the pulps. The degree of direct brightening seems to be correlated with the amount of UV-absorbing material solubilized from the pulps,, rather than the amount of sugars. Previous results also showed that it did not correspond to the brightness gain after subsequent peroxide bleaching. There is therefore no evidence indicating that xylan-derived chromophores are the main target substrates during xylanase prebleaching of kraft pulp.
