Thermomechanical processing of Mo-Nb strength steels

Over recent years, BHP has developed a familyof low carbon equivalent Mo-Nb steels specially designed forapplication to API 51 X70 and X80 ERW linepipe and which iscapable of being welded preheat free with cellulosicconsumables. Large quantities of these steels have now beensupplied and successfully welded in several major Australianprojects totalling some 150,000 tonnes over the past 5 years.Some of the more important metallurgical factors influencingthe selection of the alloy design system, the specification of thethermomechanical processing conditions and the relationshipbetween hot strip and pipe strength properties are brieflyreviewed in the paper.
