Scroll refrigeration systems in supermarket applications have become widespread in the UK. The principles of the scroll compressor and features of this technology which give size weight and reliability advantages are explained. The efficiency ofscroll in low temperature applications is compared with that of other compressor types, and the system effects are described. Typical packages designed around the scroll compressor are presented. A noise comparison between scroll and reciprocatingcompressors is given. The positive effect of the scroll characteristics on the criteria by which a user may choose a system type is discussed and can help explain the move away from conventional reciprocating systems.
