Premixed diesel combustion and emissions were controlled at medium speed and load by using a variable valve timing (VVT) mechanism in a light duty diesel engine. Combustion conditions satisfying simultaneous reduction of NO{sub}x and smoke were experimentally verified. The effects of premixing time, excess air ratio, ambient density at fuel injection and combustion temperature were investigated on NO{sub}x and smoke characteristics. The oxygen concentration of the intake gas was a dominant factor for low NO{sub}x combustion. Prolonging the premixing time under high excess air ratio and ambient density under high combustion temperature has a significant potential for reducing smoke.
