Through a combination of a reduction in lineside vegetation management over the past 40 years and an increase in the use of modern, high performance multiple units, adhesion-related incidents have increased. The modern railway demands that service disruption and the associated costs of managing low adhesion be reduced. The root causes and effects of low adhesion are in part the responsibility of all major players in the privatised railway, which in turn demands a co-ordinated approach to managinglow adhesion as a systems issue. The mainline railway has adopted such an approach through sponsorship of the cross-industry Adhesion Working Group.
