The DAmage MONitoring system (DAMON) specialized in prediction of the damage development in historical buildings is under development. It includes the following modules: 1. identification of the global structural model on the basis of the measured response to thermal loading (climatic day cycles), 2. optimal location of a limited number of sensors focused on detection of the expected variations of loading conditions 3. detection of the current state of settlement and other variation of loading conditions; 4. updating strains and stresses due to the current, modified loading conditions; 5. prediction of the damage development and eventual step back to modification of the sensor system. It was found that more precise identification of the current loading conditions is very important for reliable evaluation of the structural response. Usually, the number of sensors measuring the variation of loading conditions (e.g. settlement) is limited and therefore, the missing information has to be determined indirectly. The DAMON system enables the progressive damage analysis curried for relatively large buildings, thanks to the VDM based FEM simulation of crack propagation, without, need for remeshing and stiffness matrix reformations in the analysis process.
