This work presents the experience gained by Centro de Estudios de Corrosion at Universidad del Zulia (LUZ), using electrochemical measurements to evaluate, diagnose and repair concrete structures with corroded reinforcement. The work discusses three important cases: The Maracaibo Bridge, a salt-handling bay and an Olympic swimming pool. These structures were first visually inspected to pick out the elements/components that were to be subjected to detailed inspection using electrochemical techniques and a physical-chemical analysis of the concrete. Corrosion-potential (Ecorr) and corrosion-rate (Icorr) electrochemical measurements were used to select the zones for physical-chemical analysis of the concrete. This is of great importance, since it guarantees adequate samples without having to extract non-representative cores. These evaluations determined that potentials measurements do not provide sufficient data for diagnosing reinforcement corrosion. With the addition of corrosion rate, however, a more reliable result is obtained, allowing definition of the extension of the zone to be repaired. It also helps with the evaluation of these structures for repairs.
