2-Hydroxy-5-t-octylbenzophenone oxime (Ⅰ), 2-hydroxy-5-t-octylacetophenone oxime (Ⅱ) and 2-hydroxy-5-t-octyl-benzaldehyde oxime (Ⅲ) and their copper complexes are used to study their photo-stability under UV light in a mixture of octane:toluene (4:1 v/v). The influence of water as well as sulphuric acid on the photo-degradation of oximes is also studied. Degradation products are identified. Photo-degradation of Ⅰ yields different products compared with Ⅱ and Ⅲ. 2-Hydroxy-5-t-octylbenzophenone or 2-phenyl-5-t-octylbenzoxazole is the main degradation product of I depending on reaction conditions (diluent, water or sulphuric acid content). The former can be oximated to the oxime and recycled. The latter becomes a ballast substance. A photo-isomerization of (E)-isomer into non-active (Z)-isomer is also observed, Ⅱ and Ⅲ yields mainly 2-hydroxy-5-t-octylacetophenone and 2-hydroxy-5-t-octylbenzaldehyde, respectively, which may be oximated and the reagent recycled. Copper complexes increase the stability of hydroxyoximes and may be considered as natural stabilizers.
