Historically,maleic acid (MA) was extremely difficult to hompolymerize in comparison to other monosubstituted ethylenical acid monomers such as acrylic acid.In the past,poly(maleic acid) (PMA) was synthesized by polymerizing maleic anhydride (MAN) to form poly(maleic anhydride) (PMAN) in organic solvents,such as toluene,followed by hydrolyzing PMAN to form PMA (1).
