Metal nanoparticles have different properties when compared to their bulk properties. 1-4Moreover, their high surface-to-volume ratio renders them ideal candidates for application as catalysts -9 However, the pronounced tendency of nanoparticles for aggregation must be overcome by suitable carrier systems. Here we report on the first system that allows us to modulate the activity of nanoparticles by a thermodynamic transition that takes place within the carrier system. Figure 1 displays the principle:
