Optical absorption, power rotatory and circular dichroism of crystals of the sillenite family Bi_(12)M_xO_(20)(M-elements I-VIH of groups or their combination) were measured. The t_1-2e charge transfer transition of the [VO_4]~(3-) tetrahedral complexes is found to make a negative contribution to the optical rotation of the vanadium sillenite. We present a model. which takes into account a negative contribution from the chage-trasfer transitions of [MO_4]~(n-) complexes to the optical rotation in Bi_(12)M_xO_(20) crystals. It was found that M vacancies and crystal-field transitions of 3d-elements contribute significantly to the circular dichroism of silenite crystals.
