UPTAKE OF NUTRIENTS BY A COOL SEASON PERENNIAL AND WARM SEASON ANNUAL GRASS

With the increase in broiler production in Kentucky over the last few years, more farmers are turning to poultry litter as an inexpensive nutrient source for their forages. However, continued litter application can lead to nutrient buildups that can cause water pollution and nutrient imbalances. One potential solution is to remove forages from the field as hay or silage. Our objective was to investigate the uptake of nutrients by a cool season perennial and warm season annual hay crop to determine ifthey could be used as a viable nutrient removal tool. Treatments included poultry litter applied to orchardgrass and sudangrass at the recommended nitrogen rate, at the recommended phosphorus rate plus supplemental inorganic nitrogen, at the recommendedphosphorus rate, and inorganic fertilizer. Forage samples were collected prior to each harvest and analyzed for CP, P, Cu, Zn, and Fe. The treatments affected orchardgrass and sudangrass differently. There were differences in CP, Zn, P, and yield in sudangrass while P, Fe, Zn, Cu, and yield showed treatment effects in orchardgrass. Phosphorus concentration in orchardgrass with litter applied at the recommended N rate was similar to those with litter applied at the recommended P rate and those receivinginorganic fertilizers. In sudangrass, the lowest concentration was in forages fertilized with inorganic fertilizer. Copper concentration in sudangrass was not affected by treatment; however, litter treated plots of orchardgrass had higher Cu concentration than plots fertilized with inorganic fertilizer. Litter applied at the recommended P rate had the lowest yields, however, the yield advantage provided by other treatments was small. Our findings indicate that application of poultry litter based on a recommended P rate followed by addition of supplemental inorganic N could, in some instances, lower the accumulation of certain minerals in the soil, reduce the likelihood of adverse environmental impacts, and provide comparable yield to higher litter application rates.
