Capillary electrophoresis (CE) in the microchip format is becoming increasingly popular due to the many advantages inherent to the miniaturized planar format. These include the ability to analyze small sample volumes and employ high separation field strengths, as well as the possibility to integrate sample preparation steps. A majority of the work in this field has been focused on the design, fabrication, and implementation of such devices; far less attention has been paid to the issue of detection. Electrochemical (EC) detection provides many of the features desired in an ideal microchip detector. It is sensitive and selective, and microelectrodes can be fabricated using many of the same procedures that are already used to construct microchips. Furthermore, in situations where greater selectivity is desired, chemically modified electrodes and multiple electrode systems can be utilized.
