The main question being considered in this chapter is "Are There Shortcuts to Sustainable Agriculture?" I will address this question by summarizing central lessons from successful initiatives of farmer-centered integrated pest and crop management inseveral countries of the world. These case studies and other experiences teach us that the implementation of sustainable farming methods is seldom rapid. Rather, this conversion usually requires time and patience, since significant changes are needed infarming practices, technologies, knowledge, and in social/policy processes, and also because it entails anew paradigm of agricultural development. Nevertheless, the lessons from the cases provide useful insights for speeding up the transition from conventional to sustainable agriculture. Farmers, development agencies, scientists, and others can take advantage of information from this progress, and can avoid mistakes. This overview will include tips on social and policy aspects that are important in this process.
