VIABILITY OF PAECILOMYCES FUMOSOROSEUS (WISE) CONIDIA STORED IN PALM OIL AND ITS DERIVATIVES

The viability of Paecilomyces fumosoroseus (Wise) conidia formulated in palm oil and its selected derivatives stored for two and eight weeks at 4°C and 25°C was evaluated in the laboratory, Vesawit~R oil gave spore germinations of 95.5% and 88,5% after 2 and 8 weeks respectively and was a better medium for storage of conidia compared with the oleochemical CE 1618 and CE 1897. The POME and PKOME were not suitable for storage as no germination of conidia was obtained. The viability of the conidia stored in Vesawit~R oil at 4°C and 25°C showed no significant difference. Biological pesticide presents an alternative mean of pest control that could reduce dependence on chemical pesticides. Entomogenous fungi particularly members of Deuteromycetes suchas Paecilomyces and Beauvaria have the potential to substitute chemical insecticides and have been shown to produce good control of insect pests of crucifer (Ibrahim and Low, 1993). Almost in all cases, the entomopathogenic fungi have to be applied immediately following sporulation. There is a need to formulate these fungi so that they could be stored and used when the need arises. Oil has been found to be a suitable material for storage of the spores (Bateman et al, 1993). However, the use of oleochemicals as the media for storage is still new. The objective of this study is to evaluate the suitability of oleochemical oils for storage of the spores.
