An overview of the activities, needs and potential application of NDT technologies to systems and components is key to improved safety, service quality and cost effectiveness of the rail transport industry is presented. A second part of the paper covers the structure, organization and activities of an international joint research project being undertaken to improve the safe service life of rail through better detection and identification techniques. By seeking a better understanding of flaw growth behavior, the objective of achieving optimal rail life, with minimal traffic interruption and improved safety, is achievable.
