Restoration Planning, Implementation, and Results of a Smelter-Affected Landscape

This paper discusses planning, implementation, performance monitoring, and results of restoration at the 441-hectare Bunker Hill Hillsides Site in northern Idaho. A series of three workshops in 1998 and 1999 were initially convened to develop remediation guidance statements. Concurrent with planning, two years of intense site characterization and alternative treatment testing was conducted. Implementation has largely relied on hydro-application of restoration materials using Sikorski S-64 helicopters. Initial restoration efforts focused on establishing an early successional plant community. Additional woody vegetation was established in islands across the site. The Hillsides Site is now covered in native herbaceous vegetation, previously planted trees have responded favorably to the applied amendments, and four new native woody and seven native herbaceous volunteer species are colonizing the site. Natural regeneration is common and initiation of ecological processes, such as nutrient recycling is evident. Erosion and contaminated sediment transport from the hillsides has subsided as vegetation cover has increased. Results of the 2005 monitoring season are discussed.
