This paper discusses the implementation of a high temperature crystal oscillator for logging applications in geothermal wells. The oscillator is designed to minimize the frequency variation over a wide temperature range from room temperature to 300°C. The circuit is a Pierce crystal oscillator using a JFET transistor, a Gallium Orthophosphate crystal and high temperature resistors and capacitors. A high precision high temperature quartz crystal is also tested in the oscillator for comparison purposes. The circuit with the Gallium Orthophosphate crystal offers superior thermal stability with a frequency variation less than 300 ppm over the 20°C to 300°C temperature range.
