Application of Carbon Credit Definitions to Wayang Windu Geothermal Expansion

Low greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the proposed geothermal power project expansion at the Wayang Windu Geothermal Field in West Java, Indonesia have been used as the basis for a provisional sale of carbon credits to the government of the Netherlands. The application of carbon credit methodology to a geothermal project required interpretation of some of the issues that form the basis of a carbon credit sale including definition of project boundaries and additionality. The transaction also required the validation of descriptions of sources and sinks of greenhouse gases in geothermal systems, determination of the materiality of sources of emissions, and definition of a methodology to monitor actual emissions for later verification. Details of the application of these issues to the Wayang Windu geothermal project were proposed and validated to meet the needs of the Kyoto and Marrakesh Accords. The moderately large amounts of power production and very low gas emissions from geothermal projects in general makes geothermal carbon credit sales a possible source of significant project income. In order to effectively employ this opportunity to improve the economics of geothermal development, the geothermal industry needs to establish general agreement on standards and methodologies so that geothermal carbon credits become a known and preferred quantity in the world carbon market. This report is a measure to inform the geothermal community of the Wayang Windu example.
