Drilling fluid circulation in a well alters the initial conditions of the reservoir. One such change is the thermal disturbance, whose magnitude is a function of formation characteristics. In this work we apply an analysis method, which uses temperature logs. The temperature is measured at fixed time periods after the drilling operations were stopped. This method uses the cooling caused by the fluid circulation during drilling to determine heating indices. We consider the drilling fluid as causing the thermal disturbance, and analyzed the changes in the rock formation to identify qualitatively the location of strata with or without permeability in a reservoir of volcanic origin. It is important to emphasize in the analysis correlation of parameters such as circulation losses, lithology, drilling speed, etc. The heating indices are calculated from temperature data, measured along the well profile. With the heating indices it is feasible to determine thermal gradient as a time function. The thermal gradient is useful for determining the strata where the cold fluid penetrates into the reservoir formation and the later heat flow from the reservoir to wellbore. The heating indices are obtained from a pair of temperature logs taken at different shut-in times. The Los Humeros, Puebla, Mexico, geothermal field is considered to illustrate the application of the methodology. The wells selected are located in the central zone of the field. Applying the analysis method in this fractured reservoir was feasible to identify the influence of structures over the wells' behavior.
