Risk Based Inspection of a Turbine Inlet Steam Pipeline

As part of a Risk Based Inspection demonstration project, a turbine inlet steam pipeline of a geothermal power plant was examined after 17 years of service. The work was sponsored by the New Zealand Government, as part of an Overseas Development Assistance, ASEAN Corrosion Project in the Philippines. Pits of up to 4.69 mm depth and 20 mm diameter, with an inverted cone shape, were observed in the 10 mm thick pipeline. Erosion corrosion was seen on susceptible elbows. The extent of the erosion was less than that of the pitting observed in the same proximity and was less than 1 to 2 mm deep. A defect assessment was completed on the deepest measured pit using AS/NZS 3788, and the pipe was shown to be acceptable for service with the observed pit depth. The apparent linear corrosion rate of 0.28 mm/year, with corrosion being due to wet aerated shutdown/standby/start-up conditions and 0.1 mm of pit depth growth per shutdown was considered excessive. A less conservative semi-parabolic pit depth growth rate was proposed. A remaining lifetime to failure according to the criteria for defect size in AS/NZS 3788 was calculated to be from 17 to 23 years giving a total life of up to 40 years. Corrosion products identified were typical of the predicted corrosion processes, i.e. passive film formation during on-line operation and aerated condensate corrosion at shutdown. Recommended changes in plant and procedures to achieve dry shutdown would extend the life indefinitely, for example up to 40 more years.
