Cod farming is a young industry with still many problems to solve. One of the problems that sometimes results in reduced quality of fish is skeletal deformities. Nofima Marin (formerly AKVAFORSK) has for some years been running a monitoring program for skeletal deformities in cod. Most of the Norwegian cod fry producers have participated by submitting fish for examination, resulting in an interesting overview of the deformity problems in farmed cod. The need for a standardized diagnostic system for cod deformities has been raised during this monitoring program. In the present study, available material from this program as well as from research projects and other sources were used to make an overview of the different types of pathology that are currently seen.
