摘要

The effect of DDT and its metabolites on sperm motility parameters of two fresh water fish species (Clarias gariepinus and Oreochromis mossambicus) from two exposed and one reference site in the Limpopo Province, South Africa, were studied using a novel computer assisted sperm analysis (CASA) system based on open source software (Wilson-Leedy & Ingermann, 2007). This software was developed and adapted to suit the test species, for characterization of sperm motility parameters. It has been suggested that the cause of declining male reproductive health is related to synthetic substances that bioaccumulate and act as hormonally active substances, such as organochlorines (Skakkebaek & Keiding, 1994; Dalvie et al, 2004). A pesticide DDT and its metabolites are known endocrine disrupting chemicals that have estrogenic and anti-androgenic properties. They have detrimental effects on growth and reproduction (Kavlock et al., 1996; Sonnenschein & Soto, 1998). Although DDT was banned internationally, it is still used for Malaria vector control in areas of South Africa in accordance with the Stockholm convention (Bouwman, 2004).
