Charging of Gasborne Fine Particles by Soft X-ray and Its Application to Particle Measurement

A new bipolar charger for aerosol particles was developed by using a soft X-ray emitter. The concentration and mobility distribution of the positive and negative ions generated by the charger were measured. The charging state of aerosol particles attained by the charger was also investigated both experimentally and theoretically. From the comparison of the charging performance of the soft X-ray bipolar charger with that of a conventional ~(241)Am alpha-ray bipolar charger, the new charger was proved to be a useful instrument for neutralizing aerosol particles. In addition, reduction of ion generation by using a dose-adjustable soft X-ray emitter led to a suppression of formation of multiply-charged submicron particles. The performance of size classification using a differential mobility analyzer could be improved based on this charge suppression.
