An interdisciplinary team of researchers at the University of Florida (UF) have developed the Nova 2 small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS) designed specifically as a low-cost, autonomous, aerial imaging tool for ecological research and monitoring. Unlike most UAS imagery data which are captured primarily for reconnaissance, the Nova 2 sUAS generates rapid and accurately georeferenced low-altitude aerial survey and remote sensing data suitable for robust statistical analyses while remaining affordable to civilian users. The Nova 2 has successfully completed missions in south Florida to examine the efficacy of herbicide treatments of invasive vegetation, as well as missions to monitor colony size and nesting distribution of several wading bird populations.
