In aerostatic bearings, small holes of 0.1-0.5 mm diameter are generally used to supply pressurized air into the bearing clearance to support a load. However, in small sized bearings of less than 10 mm in diameter, it is difficult to reduce the diameter of air feed holes to less than 0.05 mm. Therefore, small sized aerostatic bearings also use air feed holes in the diameter of 0.1-0.5 mm. Thus, the ratio of the area of feed holes to the effective bearing area in these small bearings becomes relatively large compared with that of ordinary aerostatic bearings of several tens of mm in diameter. Hence it is expected that the characteristics of small sized aerostatic bearings are greatly influenced by air flow structure around air feed holes compared with those of ordinary aerostatic bearings. Therefore, the objective of the present paper is to investigate the static and dynamic characteristics of small sized aerostatic bearings. Figure 1 shows the schematic views of the aerostatic thrust bearing with inherently compensated restrictors. In this paper, effects of bearing clearance, supply pressure and number of air feed holes on the static and dynamic characteristics were investigated experimentally.
