摘要

Iron and steel producers, as is the case for many technical and industrial enterprises, depend heavily on suppliers of raw materials and services to process and deliver their products to the marketplace. Over the past 20 years, the ability of these suppliers, critical to producers in fulfilling product output, has been threatened by the accelerating rate of threats to the ability in providing their materials and services. Supplies now originate from all parts of the globe, extreme weather occurrences have increased, routes of transportation have been extended, political and financial impacts have wreaked havoc on stability, and technology dependence interjects more uncertainty. It becomes imperative for management to identify and reduce vulnerabilities to their supply chain. The risks of disruption, as well as their probability and severity, need to be understood and mitigations to them developed. The task is ponderous but, with a structured analysis, a level of assurance may be achieved. In addition, a recently available option of transferring the risk to supply chain has become an option.
