Knowledge representation in nursing is poised to address the depth of nursing knowledge about the specific phenomena of importance to nursing. Nursing theories and models may provide a starting point for making this knowledge explicit in representations. We combined knowledge building methods from nursing and ontology design methods from biomedical informatics to create a nursing representation of family health history. Our experience provides an example of how knowledge representations may be created to facilitate electronic support for nursing practice and knowledge development. The purpose of this paper is to stimulate interest in electronic representation of nursing knowledge. By describing our experience developing and evaluating an electronic representation of family health history, we hope to motivate nursing informatics researchers to explore knowledge representation (KR).
