In recent years natural-fibre-reinforced plastics have been enjoying a renaissance in automobile manufacturing as supporting materials for vehicle interior parts. They are inexpensive, have a lower density than glass-fibre-reinforced polymers and also improve the CO_2 balance. In addition, there is less wear on tools when processing them. With the increasing use of natural fibres in the construction of vehicles, Volkswagen is also making a contribution to the development of structurally weak regions of Brazil and increasing the degree of nationalization of vehicle manufacturing on the local level. A number of components in the new Volkswagen Fox (Fig. 1) which is produced in Sao Bernardo do Campo in Brazil are made of natural-fibre-reinforced polypropylene; the fibres come from the curaua (Ananas erectifolius), a plant which is native to the Amazonas region. The fibres of the curaua have a particularly high strength and flexural strength much higher than that of other natural fibres (jute, sisal, hemp). These fibres thus represent a renewable and inexpensive alternative to glass fibres. Polypropylene / curaua compounds can replace polypropylene / glass fibre in many areas.
