Dietary lipids, especially fatty acids, modulate the course of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD; Deckelbaum et al., 2006). n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) have shown anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory effects but also fail to prevent IBD and favoured remission (Bassaganya-Riera and Hontecillas, 2006). The n-6 PUFA arachidonic acid (AA) is a precursor for pro-inflammatory eicosanoids and can induce intestinal inflammation (James et al., 2000).This study investigates the molecular effects of dietary EPA and AA on intestinal inflammation in a bacterially inoculated interleukin-10 knockout (IL10) mice that develops IBD-like colitis (Roy et al, 2007).
